There’s levels to this fool!
In life, we all want the best. But sometimes we have to make the best out of what we currently have. And that’s definitely the case with NFL teams and their quarterbacks. They all want Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson but sometimes they get stuck with Teddy Bridgewater and Joe Flacco. You wanted a new 2022 Tesla but you got that old dependable 1996 Chevy Caprice instead, which is only going to take you so far. Let’s take a shot and create some levels for the 32 starting NFL QBs. From there, I’ll share some thoughts on who I think is ranked where. Here are the categories but remember, this list is fluid and can change by mid season.
The Top Guns, The Bad Boys, The Up and Comers, The I don’t know guys, The Average Joes and The Leftovers. Let’s start in reverse order.
The Leftovers
These guys just don’t seem to have the juice to be a starting quarterback, whether it’s their physical talent or a lack of processing information, their declining skillset or the fact that they just like giving the ball to the other team. They are not cutting it.
- Matty not so Ice Ryan, Mitch Trubisky, Jacoby Brissett, Carson Wentz, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Geno Smith
The Average Joes
They can win you some games. They can actually win you a lot of games and make deep playoff runs if everything goes right. But more often than not, they can’t continue making those crucial plays, big time throws, game winning drives or just eliminate the game killing turnovers. And eventually the clock hits midnight and that cinderella wagon is run off the road, buddy. Here are the Average Joes.
- Ryan Tannehill, Kirk Cousins, Jimmy G, Jared Goff (Honory only, maybe a leftover), Derek Carr, Dak Prescott (Yes, Dak hasn’t done ish and you know it), Matthew Stafford (I think he had his best year in 2021 and it’s all downhill from here).
I don’t know what this guy is yet

- Russell Wilson- I don’t know where to put this guy. He’s won a Superbowl and he always had Seattle competitive and winning games. But with those lollipop, pop fly passes that he throws now, I don’t know what to say about his arm strength or his skillset. I can’t put a SB winning QB in just any category though. I’ll stick him here until he shows me “he ain’t got it” anymore or he has a revival with Denver.
- Others- Baker Mayfield, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Daniel Jones, Kyler Murray, Davis Mills
The Up and Comers
- Jaylen Hurts – yeah, I thought about putting him in the Bad Boy category but with only 3 games in, he still has more work to do before I’m going to crown him. The same can be said about others listed here too.
- Others- Tua Tagavailoa, Justin Herbert (I’m not annointing this dude either), Trevor Lawrence
The Bad Boys
There is a common thing I hear in Alabama when someone is discussing a player that they recently started noticing and liking a lot. They say, “That’s a bad boy right there”. This category is for the guys that haven’t won a Superbowl but are Elite level QBs. And in any given month, they will have fans thinking they can take a team all the way to the Superbowl and win it.
- Others- Josh Allen, Joe Burrow (the man took his team to the SB in his 2nd season, give me some slack here)
Top Guns
These guys expect to go deep in the playoffs every year. And the media and fans expect the same thing. It’s always Superbowl or bust for these guys.
- Tom Brady- I mean come on. 45 yrs old, 7 SBs and still looking like he has the rage, um, I mean passion in him that he needs to succeed.
- Pat Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers (no need to explain with either of these two, or Brady)
That’s the complete list of 32 starters.
Going to something else for a minute, man it was lit to be at an NFL game again this past weekend. I enjoyed every minute of it and can’t wait to go to another one.

And this will do it for this one folks. Chime in below and we’ll talk about what you agree on or disagree on in my rankings. Or we can just chat about anything that you saw on Thursday, Sunday or Monday. I’m out.
