Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season is in the books. It’s great to have football back. While I have your attention, let me say this. I don’t typically like to stray from sports topics but I have to comment on the Tyrek Hill arrest/detainment situation that happened this past Sunday. Here are my thoughts.
You know, I’m not here to talk specifically about what happened, why it happened, who was at fault, or any of that. I saw Tyrek’s Hill post game interview after the Dolphins win and it gave me some good vibes. I liked the way Tyrek handled the situation and the answers to the questions that he gave. Go to the link below and listen to him speak on how he wants to be a cop and has respect for them. He didn’t try to throw all cops under a bus at this moment. I don’t know what he said in private or what his publicist told him to say, but Tyrek’s words seem genuine here. Maybe they aren’t but I feel they are. Go here and watch the first 5 minutes of his response.
At the one minute mark he speaks on how he wants “to team with Miami Dave Police and do something positive for the community because that’s what it’s all about”. Here’s the shorten version of his news conference, just in case you didnt click above.
Again, Im not here to say Tyrek is a great person and doesn’t have his faults and haven’t found himself in some awkward situations. But I can say that sounds like a man that wants to move forward, not make it a divisive situation and he wants to create some teachable moments and positive vibes out of what happened. If he truly feels that way and follows through that means there is still hope for our society. We need more Tyrek Hill type reactions in our world. We need more understanding and patience, empathy, reflection and working with each other to find solutions. We point our fingers at others way too much. We’ll probaby never be a perfect world but we can strive to be a lot better than we are today. Responses like that from Tyrek Hill are what we need.
Here’s a different video, from Monday. Look and listen to his response. He’s still not trying to totally put blame on the officers and say bad things, at least not in this portion of the video. He even says “which is right, you got to have your teammates back” as a way of understanding the situation the Miami Dade Police Department is in. He’s trying to rationalize it in a way and understand the the police department’s side of things.
Check it out.
But of course over time, the media is going to try to keep baiting him and try to get him to say some negative things about the police and create a more hostile and divisive situation. I hope he doesn’t take that bait. I hope he continues to stay on that path of high vibration and try to work with the MDPD and create change and awareness like he has mentioned. We need that type of empathy and compassion in this country and in this world! No matter who was wrong and who was right or who went too far or who immediately didn’t do what was told, we need to try to move forward in a positive way. We need to understand what could have been done better for everyone. We do not need to make this a political or a race thing. Sure race could have played a part but we are not going to make it better by pouring gas on the fire.
I will admit that I could be very naive right now and will be willing to listen to other points of view. However, this is where I stand right now. Our world is coming apart at the seams because of issues like this that carry the ability to not only open old wounds but open up pathways to divide us even more. We have to start somewhere. Maybe Tyrek’s initial post game response is a potential blueprint to how we can respond and move forward in the future when adversity hits us in the mouth. That’s just my opinion.
